CSR 250 1966 Stator Fit..

Post by knighti »

I am looking out there for some help or advice.

On buying the bike recently I had reason to take the side cover off to inspect the secondry chain. On doing so I found that the chain had been eating away and had damaged the stator and that it needed replacement. I promptly got a new replacemet stator. A copy of the one on the bike.
The problem is on trying to fit the new stator. The chain is too close and is rubbing on the Stator and also I can't get the side casing back on unless I pack it out with a very thick gasket.
1/ In error I am trying to replace a part that was wrong in the first place?
2/ There is a method to fit this part?
3/ Or that there is a correct replacement part?

It does appaer the Stator is to thick. It does fit in all other dimentions.

The bike has a 12v system.

Any ideas out there?
Cheers
John.

Hi John, I have my lightweight primary chain cover off at the moment so I have taken some measurements.........
Distance from mating face of chaincase (where it fits to engine) down to the stator is 17mm, this is where the nuts are.
The coil width is 38mm
The lamination width is about 16mm (this is the part that the studs go through for fixing the rotor)

Thinking out loud now.............
Is the drive sprocket on the correct way round? (longer spigot rotor side shorter spigot engine side)

Hope you understand, if you need a photo or two let me know.

My 1964 G2CSR has a 6 volt Wipac system and I don't think this was changed for the 66 version. Therefore I think your stator ir a replacement so, yes, you are trying to match an incorrect part.

Don't take the above for gospel, though, as I know nothing.

Two of my three lightweights, (63 AJS & 66 Matchless CSR's) had been converted to 12v, all Wipac. I also swaped my 64 650 CSR to 12V . So 12V should not cause a problem.

You should have a duplex chain on your CSR, but you might have the earlier chaincase outer cover ( for the single row chain.) This might push the stator near the chain? I've read recently there are two widths of outer chaincase on light weights.

I didn't think he was saying it was a problem, though.

Many thanks for all your comment up to now.

I only mentioned 12v as information. I have no problem with it.

The bike has a Duplex chain Fitted. Interesting comments that the side casing may be the wrong one. Should this be the case I will be shortly looking for the correct part. any ideas please?

I am involved in other forums with other clubs but find your response absolutely staggering. many thanks

John
