Can anyone help with what type of fluid and what quantity I need for a 1966 250 csr lightweight forks.

Mike do you have the heavyweight style forks for this model and year. Or the James type I think its the former)
If the heavyweight type then an SAE 20 and its about 6 fluid Oz's in each leg if doing a service. However it should be 6 1/2 fluid oz's if doing a fill strip and rebuild per leg.

I used ATF in my heavyweight forks because it was all I had. Works fine

These old things won't work with that thin stuff, put some engine oil in it.

The contrasting suggestions mean you should get a manual, a must with an old machine, that way you will know what forks you have too.

If I quote a spec its come from the manual. Heavy weight forks = SAE20 for lightweights. Volumes as noted. It works and stay in place on mine!
