Speedometer on Lightweight 350 cc

Post by Roderick »

Does anyone happen to know the specifications of the Smiths 60 mm speedo originally fitted to the G5/Model 8?

Smith reference number on face?
Max MPH?
Black face?

Are they the same on the 250s as on the 350s?

How easy are they to come by, nowadays?

Number is SN 315 3 /95 1600 100MPH, BLACK FACE and the normal G2's and model 14's (both 250's) were 80 mph speedo's not sure about the later CSR's as they were a quicker bike so may have had 100mph ones as well. see pic. not easy to come by, have seen many 80mph ones but no 100 mph ones

The 250 CSR has a 100mph speedo because it allegedly goes ( OK, went ) over 85mph when new. Allowing for speedo optimism, anything like 75mph on the road would need one that indicated more than 80.
The one that came with mine is a grey faced magnetic one going to 100mph.

Damn, my bike is a 1959 G5 and only has an 80mph speedo fitted, so thats a Matchless frame, an AJS model 8 engine, a 250's gearbox and a 250's speedo, I have a "bitsa"!!!!!, I have geared up the gearbox and it runs fine apart from getting out of breath going up steep hills unlike my model 31 650cc, but still a joy to ride.
