Numbers

With such a short production time 1960-1962 on the lightweight does anyone know how many were produced and how many survived?

I think it would be impossible to get everyone in the world to tell us if they have such a lightweight, to discover how many have survived.

Hello Martin, if you search the threads this topic has been raised before. To add to the confusion i have two G5's a 1959 with a 61 engine No 3054 and a 1961 with a 61 engine but with an unusual number 9992.

This was possiblly stamped by some rogue many years ago but i have the V5 in my name with 5 keepers listed on it so as far as i am concerned its legitimate.

The frame numbers do not match the engine numbers on lightweights. The engines do seem to follow in order with number 500 being the first according to previous posts.

To sum up G5/Model 8's are farely rare - i really like mine it runs and handles well. At this years Jampot i only saw one other one which belongs to ozmadman.

Cheers
Steve

When I was machine dating officier I would sometimes get similar questions, but fortunately in the 1980s Johnny Allen (club historian) had done some research based on the factory records which was printed in the Jampot. So thanks to John Allen's endeavours we do have some idea of production figures. John made total Lightweight production 18489, of which 3029 were G5/model 8 (1860 in 1960 and 1169 in 1961) . Remember he was working from handwritten records covering 20 years or more so there may be a margin of error. He found it too difficult to separate AJS and Matchless production figures.

And if you buy the calendar you will see them both in all their glory on "September"
