Captive or trapped or caged nuts on Lightweights

Post by Roderick »

Does anyone know a source for the captive nuts found on the Lightweights?

- The 2 in the rear frame attaching the battery stand are 2BA.

- The one on top of the steel fairing (042403), which the rear chainguard fits into on the back of the front chaincase inner is 0BA. This 0BA trapped nut takes the right hand side screw attaching the the engine plate cowling.

- The 2 in the headlight attaching to the headlight to the front fork lugs are 5/16BSF.

None of the usual AJS /Matchless parts suppliers seem to have them. I never seem to see them at autojumbles. Metric equivelents don't fit well.

Hi Rodger, i had the same issue so used metric in the headlamp shell which i got from our local hardware shop Fenland Fasteners.

However if you search the internet for 'imperial cage nut' you should see this a site called www.avonstainlessfasteners.co.uk

I think a phone call to them might be worth it.

Thanks for your e-mail - I'll drop in for a cuppa when i am in Leeds next.

Cheers.

No joy with captive BA nuts in BA on the sites suggested. The screws are easy enough to find (Dave Middleton Stainless) and the square nut itself would be easy enough for a machinist. It's the spring steel cage holding it that would be the difficult bit to make, I think.

For your headlamp try this ebay page

I use 8mm ones and re tap them to 5/16" BSF and they are fine only because I don't want to use any metric fasteners on the bike
