Points Plate Orientation

Post by Cosmic-Wizard »

Hello, me again

I have one more question to ask, then I promise to leave you all alone and post my rebuild thread. I promise.

I have done some searching in the workshop manual and online, but I'm unable to find out the correct orientation of the points plate. It seems it can locate in 4 different places and the marks that have been made don't want to line up at any point.

Any chance one of you lovely people could tell me where the points are meant to sit? I think they want to go at the top (about 1o'clock), but the marks are way off.

If you have a pic, even better.

As always, many thanks.

Hi

The position of the cam should define where the plate fits - set the engine to 1/4" BTDC and fit the points assembly to be at the point of opening. Then follow the timing procedure in the workshop manual.

There's no key on the points shaft, so the points plate is fitted “wherever it opens the points around TDC on the firing stroke”.
Ideally, it should be as shown in the manual, but the previous owner may well have fitted the points shaft with a different orientation.
