No wonder it's smoky! That jet is way oversize. I presume the carb is off a different engine?
A rebore won't affect the jetting. That is all within the normal range of adjustment on the standard jets...

When I collected the bike the PO gave me a jiffy envelope with carb resto kit remains in it. So he definately has been in it.

Well done keeping at it. Once you have a reliable spark, carb next and then see how she goes. Given these bikes came out of the factory in good condition it is usually a previous owner to blame for unexplained adjustments!
