Matchless G5 Primary Chain Noise
My 1962 G5 duplex primary chain appears to be fouling the inner case near the engine sprocket. Should there be a shim behind the sprocket to prevent this? The Matchless spares list includes a shim (no. 044058) in the engine sprocket section for the G5 and the exploded diagram in F. Neill shows what looks like a shim or an oil seal (no. 041091) behind the sprocket. Any ideas about the shim or other possible causes please?

Don't know the G5 but it seems to me you are giving the answer yourself: if the spares list shows a shim that is absent on your engine, isn't this then the right place to start? When ever I am in doubt in such cases, I try to establish what the standard set-up is and then work from there it the trouble persists.
Good luck!
