Lucas dynamo E3AR on 1955 GLS and E3NLO rebuild

Post by rudelan_LAPSED »

Hello,

On my G3LS of 1955, is a LUCAS E3AR dynamo .. Which is not normal, because I should have an E3N no?
As the nut fixing the pinion of this dynamo always fell in the chaincase ;-( ,did a search on the forum and I found the reason : no good fixing parts!.
My question: is the LUCAS E3AR compatible with my 1955 G3 (Positive Earth)? Thank you for your opinion, important because the dynamo is ni good and before to spend money for nothing?

Thanks!
Regards, Ruddy

The E3AR was fitted on G3s up to 1950 I think from looking at the Parts Lists, then the N as you say Ruddy up to '57.
The AR will work OK, but there are detail design improvements in the N, which shares (for example) the sturdier brush end bearing set up of the E3L series, and also, I think, just a few more Watts available maybe than the AR.
The earth is your choice as they can be set either way.
If you are faced with having to rebuild the thing anyway, it might be the time to try to find an E3N, but if you can't, you could have the AR sorted out and it would be OK, I reckon anyway.

I would only use the E3AR as a very last resort. The "Bakelite" rear bearing / brush holder moulding will be getting on for 70 years old, probably cracked by now (if it isn't, it will be soon!) and your chances of finding a replacement are only marginally greater than finding a unicorn's horn. If you can't find a serviceable E3N then you can do what I did on my 500cc AJS and my 350cc Matchless. Get hold of a long E3L dynamo... they were fitted to may makes and models and are relatively common. The one fitted to my G3 was originally on a BSA A10. Then send it to Paul Dunn who for a modest fee will completely rebuild it as a short E3N, with the correct end plate for a G3. As I said, he'd done two for me. The service was fast and I found him very knowledgeable to talk to.

Hello,

I started dismantling my Dynamo E3LO.
It is 1954, written on armature.
She was very hot, the lid is distorted inside and nothing on the outside?

A wire has melted on the dynamo, the cover band is covered

I was looking for the remains of fried eggs and bacon in the pictures - Luckily, the bits are all available to bring it back to 'before the fire in the kitchen'!
Good luck with it!
