Renewed starting difficulties.

Post by NaughtyNetley »

I have put a couple of hundred miles on the G3 now and I'm loving it.
Of late starting is not straightforward. It takes 5 minutes and lots of tickling and kicking to get it going. Once started it runs fine and if I have to stop it, it starts first kick when warm.
I've found the spark is very weak. I changed the plug and condenser and then the first kick looks good but it deteriorates.
Any ideas please.

Dirty points or wrong grade of plug perhaps?

Plug was ngk b5es but I put an b8es in as suggested on this forum.
I've also checked and cleaned the points.
It's also the alternator model.

Ah.... If there is a good charge in the battery then maybe the coil is iffy.

Do you have another battery you can try? Have you checked the voltage across the terminals while trying to start from cold? After a run and with the engine warm, the battery will have (hopefully) been receiving a charge from the alternator. You could simulate that with a cold start by connecting the battery charger for half an hour or so prior to starting. It could be the coil, but they have a tendency to be more problematic when hot - the opposite of what you're seeing.

Hi

Sounds like it could be a fuel issue - check the pilot jet and pilot bypass for debris.

Hi Neil, I tend to run sixes or sevens for NGK plugs, it may be worth cleaning your points first before buying new parts.

Thank you all for your input and advice. Apologies for the late reply but busy at work for the last few days and finally managed to get into the shed today to investigate what you've suggested.
It appears there are multiple problems.
The coil seemed to have died, but I had a spare that came with it, the points were missing a isolating fibre washer and the timing was a smidge out the carburettor has warped a little thereby not sealing properly and is generally well worn.
Thanks to a knowledgeable friend coming over, all seems to be falling into place though I shall be putting my hand in my wallet, again.
Ah, the joys of old motorcycles and I'm loving every minute.
I shall keep you posted.......... Until the next time 😉
