Change from Magneto to Boyer Bransden ignition
Hi All,
I am the proud owner of a 1961 AJS 16M that I am currently trying to get back to originality and improve it here and there.
The previous owner removed the original ignition system and replaced it with an N1 Magneto.
I want to remove the Magneto and replace it with a Boyer Bransden system.
I have been able to buy the original casings to house the system but am unsure what else is required.
Looking at the below exploded view I have identified the washers, bolts, etc. Do I also need the Cam?
Anything else I have missed?
Thanks,
Tim

Yes you will need an exhaust cam with internal taper and thread. Is it a 12v system? If not it would be a good time to convert to 12volts. I would look at Pazon Electronic Ignition as well as Boyer.

If you are referring to the points cam on the ATD it will depend whether the electronic ignition is mechanical or electronic advanced/retarded. The Boyer system I have installed on my T160V is electronically advanced so no ATD or cam:

I think he means that with his present magneto set-up he has a pre-58 exhaust cam with male taper and external thread. With Electronic Ignition he needs a '58 on cam with internal taper and thread.

Re: Change from Magneto to Boyer Bransden ignition
I went in the other direction... When I rebuilt my basket case 1953 G3LS, I didn't have a magneto available but I did have the bottom end of a 1961 500cc engine. I used the timing case and cover, and BOTH camshafts from the 500cc on the 350cc. You won't be able to use either of the camshafts from the points engine with a magneto chaincase. I kept the points and didn't change to electronic ignition. I just had to make a bracket to hold the coil to the top frame tube under the tank. It worked very well and runs beautifully. Points and a dynamo... not a usual combination

No he won't be using the magneto chaincase, he has bought the points housing.

Re: Change from Magneto to Boyer Bransden ignition
The original post says that he's changing FROM points and coil, TO a magneto. In which case he will need the magneto chaincase etc. He will also need BOTH camshafts from a magneto engine as neither of the points ignition camshafts will be suitable.dave16mct wrote:No he won't be using the magneto chaincase, he has bought the points housing.

In that case he will need both camshafts from a points ignition engine.

Re: Change from Magneto to Boyer Bransden ignition
Thanks all for you help.
I will try to procure a post '58 exhaust cam, does anyone know if a company swaps these, as my cams are in excellent condition.
It is not a 12v system at the moment as most of the wiring loom has been snipped off.
I will definitely swap over to a 12v system.
Any benefits of the Pazon system vs the Boyer?
Cheers,
Tim
