Hi, I am new here, I'm the proud owner of a 1955 AJS 16ms with which I enjoy riding in Dorset, I would like to ask a question, the bike starts very easily and pulls well, but the tick over is unreliable and on easing back on the throttle the engine tends to hunt, I am just about to strip the carb and clean it, hopefully finding why the tick over is erratic, but any ideas on the hunting..?

carb slide/body worn out. try putting your finger against the slide when its at the point of tickover and if you can feel movement fore and aft then its worn.

Worn slider in carb. I had exactly the same problem. Realised there's no point cleaning or overhauling the carb because you can't undo the wear! I fitted a brand new one from Burlen and it's great...but beware, they sent it with the wrong main jet! Even though it was marked up on the box as being the right size the jet was wrong. Everything else was perfect and I just fitted the old jet in the new carb.
