Frame

Post by smileyinfrance »

I Have a 1956 AJS 16MS in trials trim.
DVLA has it down as 1956 however the engine number is 1956 and the frame number 1949 49/18 with a swinging arm.
Is the AJS 16MS frame the same as an 18MS?

Yes but it isn't called an 18M, just model 18. Both are rigid frames.

Welcome, Ian.

You can check this out (and which other parts are common to both models) by referring to the Part nos. (same for AJS or Matchless) in the Spares List here under 'Books':

http://archives.jampot.dk/book/

For future ref. it would help to mention the year in your question or if you have a bike already put it in your Profile. ;)

Are you having difficulty opening the link I gave you yesterday?

Yes thank you, but, I thought it was a 49 frame because of the frame number, but it appears that it may be a 56 as it might have an A above the first number. I could see the documents but the frame on the 49 documents was not the same as mine, but I thought as 49 was the year they went from ridgid to swinging arm it may have been a transition period.
I hope that makes sense.

Don't know what your frame number is. However, DVLA date the year of a bike by its frame number. So to get it registered, who ever dated the frame was probably correct as it being 1956.
