Nut removal, engine shock absorber

Good morning,
Stuck again! Trying to remove the nut to the drive sprocket/engine shock absorber in preparation for engine removal. Just can't see the trick that I'm sure is involved! The shock absorber just turns to a point where I'm concerned I may damage something and the nut sticks fast. It appears that the previous ‘service operative' gave the nut a whack with a hammer and drift. Not sure I want to resort to that!
Any help, as ever, much appreciated.

Hi

Just get a long breaker bar and lean on it - you will not damage anything and the shock absorber will not 'over cam' if it is assembled correctly.

Hi Mick,

Thanks , will give it a go. Does the primary chain to clutch still need to be connected? I only ask as I've been employing the in gear, foot brake on method. I had taken the chain off but put it back so as to do this but still no joy!

leave the chain on, and do as Mick says.

Hi Rob,

Thanks, will give it another go. I did try just now, as a test, but the clutch just continued to turn as I leant on the bar. Top gear engaged and leaning on foot brake. I'm obviously making a basic mistake somewhere.

Another cuppa and a head scratch!

It doesn't help if you haven't got access to one, but I've yet to find a crankshaft nut that doesn't give up when I bring out the air powered impact gun. I've not used a cordless battery version but one of them would probably do the trick and in the great scheme of things, not too expensive.

Clutch slipping is the problem. Give the plates a good clean and over tighten the spring adjustment.

You can also lock the drive shaft sprocket and the clutch sprocket by using/trapping a bar (e.g. a tyre lever of suitable length) to span the distance between the teeth of both sprockets.

Might look for the battery version of cordless impact driver.

At risk of incurring the disapproval of the non-bodging fraternity I have in extremis (i.e. at the roadside) prevented the driving shaft from turning by trapping a piece of wood between the underside of the top run of the chain and the engine sprocket, allowing the teeth of the engine sprocket to bite into the piece of wood.
