Dear Sirs!
I understand that a G3L can be fitted with two different gearboxes. A Burman or an AMC. I would like to know what year they changed, and also about the one is better than the other.
Also a question regarding the motor. I need to know, about the cams in the earlier magneto ignition motor are identical with these in the later alternator motor.
I hope you can help.
yours sincerely,
Palle Bugtrup. DK 8410. DENMARK.

Matchless G3L Gearbox
The G3L actually had 3 types of gearboxes. Up till 1951 it was a Burman CP box, 1952-1956 it was a Burman B52 box, and from 1957 it was an AMC type. I'm not sure that they were called G3L when they had the AMC box.
The AMC is supposed to have a better gearchange, otherwise there is not much difference. There are many versions of the AMC box (for AJS, for Nortons, and for twins and singles, etc), many of these will NOT fit the G3L. The correct box for your year will work well enough.
The cams became higher lift somewhere in the late 1950s (?), be worth comparing part numbers. If you have an iron head these are probably not a good idea.
hopethishelps,
Rohan.
