If you are using a feeler "blade" as opposed to round wire. I would say the clearance is considerably more than 5 thou. As the gauge would be sitting as a tangent to the shaft.

Yes you are quite right, but with only a trimmed down flat blade to hand, hence my comment, "Although not very precise........"
