How to get a kickstart rubber onto the kickstart?
Hello again. I got a lovely new kickstart rubber from the spares dept for my B52 box. I boiled it for 20 mins and have managed to get it about a quarter of the way on using brute force and a little oil. Is there a trick that I'm missing?

You don't want to use oil. You need something that'll evaporate when the rubber's in place, otherwise it will come off. Use turps/ petrol/water and maybe warm the rubber with a hot air gun. Wear gloves. Remember to add seasoning if you do boil it. By the way your avatar's scary.

Perhaps the rubber is the wrong size?

Most I have ever needed to do is let them warm up in the bean tin of boiling water. Washing up liquid along the KS length. Turn / bend as you push. If the rubber has a solid end a hole to let trapped air escape, like handle grips have will help. This need only be a small hole near the end.

You could try squirting some methane gas from a burner/pressurised lighter re-fill canister on to the right angle bit of the kick start which the rubber goes on. That will make it pretty cold and shrink a tiny tiny bit which will increase the clearance a bit - it all helps. Or you could take the kick start off and put it in the freezer overnight and than marry up to soften rubber.
When I did mine, I took the kick start off, softened the rubber as you have done, started it off and then, with the closed end of rubber supported on the bench, belted the back end of the right angle section squarely with a mallet a few times down into the rubber. You need to give it some welly - went on a treat .

A pair of grippy gloves and wound it on - no other elements involved.
But that was on an AMC lever 'cos I've swapped out the Burman. The lever o my Burman is alloy and don't thinkg I'll whack it too much. I also has a natty pin through it with a sharp end where the rubber fit; I can't remember how I got a rubber onto that.
Our American cousins will be laughing themselves silly at this thread.

Perhaps the kickstart is a non standard item?spookefoote1956 wrote:Perhaps the rubber is the wrong size?
Pull the rubber off again because you don't want any oil on it. I find just a bit of petrol poured inside will enable it to slip into place. (No comments please Sprids)

You could make a small hole in the closed end and blow compressed air in with an airgun while pushing it onto the kickstart.
