Hi Rob, Thanks for your help, an update ...its now off -- in two pieces! the key looked twisted and dug into the shaft. Will be ordering another one next week.

That would explain why it wouldn't come off! No stock at Kettering so your choice is limited, either Steven at AMC classic spares or a secondhand one.
