Clutch Sprocket Inserts - Need some advice

Post by schrottschlecker »

Hello Forum,

I am missing 1 single insert piece that goes in the clutch sprocket of my 58 Model 18. As far as I know, the inserts are not available.
The existing inserts are about 7mm thick and pretty hard, slightly softer than a break pad. They are not very tight in the sprocket, some are quiet loose with freeplay.
Now I want to ask for your advice. Shall I
- Carve the missing piece out of...what? 7mm cork?
- Carve all inserts out of 8mm cork?
- Buy a complete new clutch for conversion? The sprocket and the clutch plates look almost unused, though. The bike hasbeen restored 30 years ago and ran just a few miles before it got stored and dismantled.

What would you do?

Thanks for your feedback.

Have you tried Steve Surbey at AMC Classic Spares, he often has supplies of unobtainium

You've only lost approximately 5% of the surface friction area on 1 plate. Just run it as it is if you can't find a replacement. I doubt it will make any difference.

If you are really worried by it you could make a replacement from a car brakepad, but you should use a breathing filter when cutting the stuff.
