Cable routes on g80 rigid?

Post by Samuel »

I've just found the speedo drive broken after 600 miles at the tight curve at the top end ner where it goes under the petrol tank. The choke cable also seems to be having a hard time so is there any wise advice or correct routing of these cables ?

Cable routes on g80 rigid?

Basically try to keep as smooth a route as possible with no abrupt bends. i route my speedo cable under the frame until the front of the engine and then up the front downpipe. That means it has no sharp bends.

If you do a search on Help there have been some good suggestions on cables.

That seems to suggest you have a longer than standard speedo cable as I tried holding up the outer casing against the frame along the route you prefer and it is too short by some 10 cm.

Cable routes on g80 rigid?

Post by Steve Martin »

Hello Sam, for a '49 cable, the Parts List gives 553395-1-54,[54"?] which appears as 900071/6, [4'6" long] in Jampot Spares. I have just checked out such a length on my '46 G3L, and agree that this cable is not long enough to route under the engine as suggested. However I also agree that this is a better routing, and have applied it successfully to my '58 G3LS. I used the 5'5" Cable 900071/5, and although I haven't checked it, I assume the end fittings will suit the '49 items, and I think you will find it will reach. [If it's too long there is also a 5'2" version for lightweights and CS/CSRs, which might fit.]

I'm glad you brought the matter up, I've got the same job pending, so I'd like to know how you get on.

Cheers, Steve.

Cable routes on g80 rigid?

I think the original line for the cable on a rigid was up below the seat and along the frame under the tank. The orignal cables may have had armouring at the point of the bend round to the speedo. You used to be able to get armoured cables from one of the specialist suppliers (armoured for about a foot). There is also a hole in the frame at this point and the cable should be held to the frame by a clip. If this is not used you need to be very careful to ensure the route does not allow the cable to be snagged between the steering stop on frame on full lock.
Finally when you grease the inner before fitting it do not grease the last 18 inches. Sounds silly because that is where the bend is but there will be plenty in the outer from the grease put on the inner cable that has already been threaded in. If you do grease the last 18 inches you risk it being forced up into the speedo and then you might as well have not bothered with the cable as it won't work.
