Rear wheel spindle parts

Post by Matchbox Kid »

Hello everybody
I'm hoping someone can assist me here... I have a 1954 G80s I'm restoring and I need to know how worn some of my parts are.
The parts in question are the 2 snail cams 014700/014710 the 2 011290 collars and the 014704 brake plate locating sleeve.
I need to know the length on the spindle of those if anyone knows, so I can check I have the right parts and shim them out if necessary to get the back wheel correct.
I know the other spacer 014705 is an inch & 9/16th but can find no info on the other bits.
Thanks in advance

I can measure these as I haven't assembled my wheel yet. In the parts list it gives the length of the speedo drive spacer 014705 as 1 1/16". By the way why do you think they might be worn? I wouldn't think they can wear much. Surely they're fixed tightly together all the time.

when you put the brake backplate on the spacer, it isn't flush, the spacer is inset by quite a bit, plus if you rotate it it is rubbing on the sprocket/drum. Also the keyway protrudes from both ends of the snail cam on the brake side meaning you can't do the wheel nuts up properly. I was hoping for a ballpark figure to get some shims to take me back to near normality. yes you are right, that's my mistake as 014705 at an inch and 9/16, it is an inch and 1/16th.

Thanks Dave
I will measure mine tomorrow and see how they match up.
I tried the spindle in the fork today and it looks like the brake side cam is too "thin" as when you do up the nuts it pulls the brakeplate out of alignment and rubs against the lower jampot mount, which suggests my snailcam is damaged or abused in some way or I'm something missing, although according to my parts list it's all there.

Hi Dave
Update.... all the parts are broadly similar, although with minor variances, I'm guessing due to the wear and tear of 60+ years, however, the snail cam on the brake plate side is only 0.554"/13.6mm, a gap of 6mm and looking closely at it, someone... that would have been my Father, has cut it down to the size it is, which explains why the whole assembly is missing the extra 6mm and why the brake plate sits at an angle when you do the spindle nuts up.
Sadly Jampot spares is out of stock but I have found some thick washers in my spares box that will do the job once a keyway is filed in them and that will suffice until I can replace with new.
Thanks very much for your help Dave, another mystery solved.
