1950 Model 18 gearbox oil level/quantity

Post by G12atlast_LAPSED »

Hmm, my new acquisition has oil in the gearbox and the manual helpfully says adding '2 fl Oz every thousand miles should be sufficient'. No need for more as it 'will just cause leaks.'!

At no point that I can find does it say how much should be in there at an oil change, nor whether there is a level to aim for.

Is anyone able to help a stuck chap?

Cheers,

Simon

It states 1 pint of SAE 50 in the gearbox in the 1950 manual. I think the 'add 2 fluid ounces etc ' is for if it's got grease in it.

40 years ago I got the following advice from Les at Russell's when I inquired about a kickstart seal for the CP box. " just fill the box until you can see the bottom of the kick start quadrant stirring the oil" works for me
