Post by matchlessfranck »

Good evening everybody.
One of our members in France is looking for a foldable kick start lever for his 53 18S.
Any idea?
Thank you.

I think this subject has been covered recently. I don't think Burman did a folding kick start ( I may be wrong, I was once ).

I sold one last year. I was a bit surprised when I put it on eBay, there were immediately dozens of watchers and it went for nearly £100. It was new, finished in a phosphate black coating. I imagine it must have been made by one of the trials specialists, so I would start asking them. Terry Weadon (something like that) makes the extended ones for AMC boxes so would be a good place to start. And the guy that makes the special frames and oil tanks etc, Progressive Classics I think. He is in this club, saw him at the Stow on the Wold Jampot.

Dug out the old ebay photos. It also fitted the late CP box. I got it with a Burman box that came from a chap called Velofellow, he seems to have disappeared from Google, used to have YouTubes of his G80CS. I didn't need it as i used an AMC box in my Rigid Matchless special.

I have one fitted to the Burman box on my G80CS. I think they were standard fitting on competition machines. They are much sought after and you don't see them for sale very often. These gearboxes were fitted to other marques of machine beside AJS and Matchless. Ariel and Panther used them and maybe also the Vincent Comet but not to sure about that. I may be worth checking out the other owners clubs.

or possibly twice now. Mind you I suspect the folding ones may have been an aftermarket item rather than made by Burman, mine is marked KCB7 in a casting mark. The 1955 Matchless sales catelogue in the archives shows the G80CS with an identical folding kickstart.

If I may try to help put this one finally to bed. Hen's teeth, rocking horse poo. Take one Burman standard kickstart lever. Cut the end off it. Get a Norton, Triumph, BSA (yadda yadda) one and do the same. Weld 'em together. Dress it off. Re-chrome it, if it tickles your fancy. Amaze your friends etc, etc

Before finally signing this thread off, I'll pop up and say that there are actually 2 types of folding Burman kickstarter. The deep set one as on Spookies CS and a slightly shallower version that fitted the rigid comps. I have both types fitted. Not to the same bike at the same time before some smart arse makes a comment!!!

My 1953 G3 parts list shows a folding Kickstarter lever no's G-45-2, G-43-3 & G43-5 fitted to G3lc & G80cs etc. That doesn't make them any less scarce though!
