I fitted the new plunger and spring yesterday and the gearbox is now slick and super smooth again.
Many thanks to all who replied, particularly Rob for the detailed information and photo which confirmed the incorrect part. :beer:

I even got a bit of sunshine for the extended test ride ....... :D
