Though I thought I had fixed the a/r lever problem on my bike, I noticed that the problem had returned yesterday. The cause was incorrect adjustment of the free play in the cable. Too much slack and pushing the lever fully into the advance position forces the bit that engages with the cam ring out of its slot, then everything locks solid. Lesson learned and this was probably the original issue, not incorrect assembly as I thought initially.
I mention it in case anyone else gets the same problem, or is it just me that does stupid things.
