one of my AJS 600's head gaskets blew on a ride last Friday, lovely day shame about the smoke! I now have the necessary kit from club spares and would like to know what torque to set the head bolts at please? The manual is not very informative!

M30 Head bolt torque setting
Phil,
The correct setting is 25 lbf/ft. Torque to this value when you refit the heads, then again after riding for a couple of miles and letting the engine get cold again. Then do the same after about 50 to 100 miles. This should eliminate any blowing problems, unless you have a warped head.
Also if you sufferd oil leaks from the head gasket, put a thin film of silicon on both faces of the gasket and leave to cure overnight before fitting.
Cheers,
Dave.

thanks of the advice, what a pain having to strip off the tank after a few miles
I've got it back together and still have a leak, looks like from round the dynamo, a new cork is on it's way. The head job went fine and it sounds much healthier, first 4 miles went fine!
