Mod 30 AJS 1956 questions from NSW.

Post by Rob Andrews. »

Please could someone assist me with an initial assessment of a Mod30 available locally for $4,000AUD asking? A nice machine suitable for our windy roads here on the Far North Coast of the State of NSW. The AJS/Matchless quality easilt shines through the grime....

It appears to be intact- except for the short rubber connection to the optional air cleaner from the carb. .The steel plate is there -as is the cleaner itself.
Is a [repro?] rubber connection tube available.... and where?

The engine sounds noisy in the tappets on starting, fairly smokey exausts on starting too after standing over 2 months, battery flat, oil tap fitted and used. But quienenand stops smoking after warm-up.
Is this fairly normal for the old Ajay 600 twin?

What is the apparently well known problem with bigend and crank non-reliability? Was it endemic with this model and G11? Are there any signs to hear/look for? If purchased it will not be thrashed in low gear and 100KPH (60MPH?) will be its top speed on club runs.

I have heard about the AJS primary chaincase problem of poor sealing. Any good methods of fixes or mitegation known by your UK club?

The subject is a certain victim, but a new rubber sealing strip is in the spares box.
Also please comment upon the famous c/case breather failure leading to oil flooding the primary and depleting the tank as well.

Comments please, all are very welcome at this initial stages.[;)]

(NB I have owned a Velo Venom and Norton ES2(500T) before ...so feel free to talk...I DO understand ! ....Current mounts are a '95 Suzuki 650 DR single and a Clubman Trials Yamaha TY175 -1975).

Hi rob,

Answers from a single specialist but here goes.

The price sounds fair ifthe bike is complete and running and in reasonable condition BUT only you can be a judge in front of the bike. Look for any any expenditure musts and look to deduct those from the price[8)]

The chaincase can be very effectively sealed using builders silicone appied between the mating surfaces then replacing the rubber band and alloy clamp band. The UK spares svheme also stock an alternative rubber band that has an arrowhead profile which i understand also works well.

I think the spares scheme can also help with the carb rubber.

I think crank problems stem from poor assembly and or badly balenced cranks. This problem is as much myth as reality.

If the bike has been standing a long time i guess you will want to strip and clean the motor and check mains and bigend bearings are OK as well as oilways are free.

Used spares can be obtained at www.amcclassicspares.com and you will get a great deal of help from an internet group dedicated to postwar AJS & Matchless, including quite a number in OZ so you may have help on your doorstep as well as 600 members worldwide to asist.
