G12 AMC Gear Box Assembly

Post by gsneyd »

I need a bit of help assembling the AMC gear box on my G12, in particular the alignment of the cam plate and the quadrant. The manual states 1. Raise the lever portion of the quadrant with the radius of the lever in line with the top right hand cover stud (top gear). 2. Insert the cam plate so that the first two teeth of the quadrant can be seen through the slot in the cam plate.
The first bit I get but what are the first two teeth (I guess the nearest to me or the lower - as assembled) and the near part of the lower slot of the cam plate with the rippled out edge also the nearest. (This is as per the drawing in the Workshop instruction manual.
Is there any way I can prove its all OK prior to final assy?

Every printed manual on this box that I've seen has a mistake when it comes to describing how to time the quadrant. It's one tooth out. Trial and error to get it right. With it mounted in a vice by the bottom lug, assemble cover plate and try to select all gears, while turning the clutch and sprocket shafts. If you can get all 4 gears it's ok.
