K2F Magneto gasket replacement

Post by John Carney »

Hi, I'm new to the club and trying to get an old 1961 AJS 650 back on the road after 40 years.
I've had the Magneto serviced and repaired and about to put it back on.
The replacement gasket is green soft on one side and grey/black slightly rougher the other side.
Does it matter which way around it goes, and would it be advisable to use well seal on both sides as it goes back on ?
When I took it off the HT leads and advance / retard cable all went between the manifold and the cylinder head. Do you think this is the best routing or would at least the HT leads be better running outside directly to the plugs ?
Thanks John

I've never heard of that gasket but I usually put Wellseal on one side and grease the other. I put the HT leads and A/R cable between the manifold and cylinder head.

Thanks Dave :)
In that case I think the slightly softer green side of the gasket must be for the magneto to sit on, (which I'm assuming you're meaning that's the side you would grease), and the gasket to engine casing is the grey/ black with well seal.

I would 'stick' the gasket to the mag with wellseal. Then grease the timing cover. Then if you need to remove the mag, the gasket stays on it. Same with the rocker caps. Just makes it easier for checking the tappets.

Makes sense. Thanks again. Do you have a grease you'd recommend by any chance ?

Just any LM bearing grease.
