1949 250cc petrol tank

Post by montesamike »

I have a 1949 AJS 250 cc trials bike....... can anyone tell me or post photographs of the way the petrol tank fits to the frame. Mine has four fixings which are metal washers with a rubber washer sandwiched between them. I dont have the bolts so, not sure if they are shouldered or what......
The holes in the frame are larger than the holes in the mounting washers. Is there a top hat type arrangement to take up the extra size in the frame.

Also, does anyone know the type and size of thread in the petrol tank that these fittings screw into.

Any help or photo's would be a great help.

Many thanks

Mike

There was no 1949 AJS 250, production of the 250 stoped in 1940, it was not untill 1958 before a new 250 came along.
Can we see a pic of what you have, and/or the frame & engine. Parts you have seem to be correct for 1949, but not complete, there other rubbers & spacer tubes, you may need a bolt at the fixing point by the oil tank on the R/H side. The fittings are not done up tight, so must be wired on via the holes in the tabs and bolt head. Too tight will cause vibration. Frame are are larger to assist fitting, even then you will have to loosely start all four fixings for easier fitting of the tank. If your bike is fitted with a prewar 250 or a 49 350 engine number will confirm this.

Mike, I think some clarification is required. You say in yout post, and the thread title that your bike is a 1949 model but you r profile mentions a 1940 model.

Well spoted Janet, if the bike is 1940, then you should see an engine number prefixed 40/12 or 40/22, Thats a 1940 250 coil ignition single port head all black finish, the mod 22 being the de lux version with twin port head, mag. ignition and black & chrome petrol tank.
( tanks with instrument panel ) Girder forks had a casting at the top for the speedo to drop in. Note there was no trails version in 1940.

Hi Mike,

A nice little trails machine.

What you have is a machine made of various marques, years & models, first registered as a machine in 1949.

The log book shows the engine number which is a 1940 AJS model 22, 250 c.c.

The frame has a 1948 number, if you really wanted to know if this frame was AJS or Matchless, 350 c.c. or 500 c.c.

you would need the clubs Dating officer Roy Bellett to confirm this. If you have a V5 thats OK,

if not you will need Roys help in reclaiming the original reg. no.

Machines are declared manufactured by the frame year of manufacture.

So a V5 would read declared manufactured 1948. The date of registration means exactly what it says only.

The NPC. is in fact a Surrey County Council 1949 number.

You should be able to search the forum for "wheel rebuilds " I would had thought, if yuo removed a good spoke,

spares ones could be made. Also search Chrome Plating, for the nearest company to you.

Hope this helps, Rob. (e- mail pasted to forum )
