Matchless G80 Oil Ring

Post by ChrisWilliams »

Hello there

A friend of mine has stripped his 64/65 G80 and is now unsure which way the oil control ring is refitted

He says it is in 2 parts one of which is stepped ?

Can anyone help ?

Thanks Chris

Any difference will be that one or both rings are tapered. The large side should always go down, as a scraper. Taper can be determined by scraping a finger with the edge, one way will scrape, the other slide easily. If none is found, it doesn't matter which way. AMC oil control rings were two-part, the top was tapered & smooth on both sides. The lower was tapered, smooth on the bottom but with lugs on top that served as spacers, & also taper edge. Cheers, Don.
