Hi everyone , can anyone tell me the horsepower rating for a 1938 Matchless Model X ? I wish to buy a 1938 repro tax disc for my bike and in those days they wrote the hp rating on the disc !, many thanks Rob

As far as I know, cc was used in 30s for motorcycles and either HP or cc prior to that. HP (otherwise known as RAC Tax Rating and not to be confused with bhp) was used for cars at £1/HP, reducing to 15s/HP in 1935. A universal rate of £10pa replaced the old system in 1948.
Tax rates for motorcycles carried on being dependent on cc. On older discs the box marked "SEAT CAPACITY" had the word "SEAT" crossed out and the cc entered.

You should see in 1938 factory literature the mod X is 990 c.c.

Thanks yes the website for the reproduction tax discs asks for HP (RAC rating) but again I don't know what to fill in for a 1938 Model X
