hi all looking for info pics ect on this machine my dad used to taz around on back in his youth 1930 350? twin port, big valve, 6r, I think that this was the fore runner or deveopment 7r, even though it was only ohv and not ohc? , many thanks inadvance steve

R is the code letter for 1930. so its R6 the 1930 350 OHC racer was the R7. Note in the post war years the 350 OHC racer was called model 7R. The model E7 was introduced in 1925 with OHV engine E the year code letter, 1926 saw a 500 cc version introduced, year code letter G Same for 1927 year code H, In 1928 both models became OHC, year code G ( G7 & G10 )
1929 M year code, 1930 R, 1931 S 1932 T, In 1933 the last two digits of the year were use 33/7 & 33/10, and so on. So the model 7 was around from 1925, In post war years the model 7 was reintroduced.
I have no idea why in post war years it named 7R, obvious, but R ?, its was the 1930 year code letter, but why use that?
Could R stand for racing?

Everyone seems to think the OHC engines were for racing only. But you could buy a Model 7 or 10 for road use. They were in a different (read lower) state of tune than the 7R or 10R which were race spec and I think came without road accessories ie lights mufflers

Well there were OHC prewar Matchless & AJS mulit cylinder OHC road bikes as well as the singles, even the 1936 mod 20 vee four AJS was offered as a road bike , Matchless Silver Hawk OHC 4, also post war OHC road bikes. Sorry, I thought we were on the singles. Only OHC post war road equipped was the G50CSR. A 7R, G45 or G50 was never available ex factory in road trim, but the pre war cammy singles were and did not have the R after the model number

Its getting a bit mixed as usual Marty , the topic started with 1930 R which was mistaken as it was the year code letter. Some prewar machines did in fact have R for racing as well as the year code letter but as a prefix not a surfix. Note in 1926 there was a model GR7 G the 1926 yearcode letter R = racing. In most cases machines only had the year code letter and model number, and insted called racing, standard,, sporting, speedway if the spec differed
