Ignition Timing 350 big port
Hi
I am trying to find the correct ignition timing for a 350 big port it is a 1928 model K6 I think. I have found a few manuals but not one that has the K6 model it is an overhead valve engine.
It used to be my Grandads race bike it does run but I want to be sure I have it timed correctlly.
I have run it on Castrol R is this the best oil to use?
Thanks for any help
Paul

If you set it at 1/2 BTDC it will run OK,you can it a bit less if need be, aren't these engines mags on a vernier sprocket?
If its total loss oiling R is fine but a waste of money, the cheapest monograde will suffice as its only used once.
As its on R it may be best to stick with it.

Yes they do have the vernier sprocket I have been running it at about 0.5" so that has worked out well.
I just love the smell of Castrol R and it does not get used that much at the moment.
Thanks for the help

To change from castrol R to a normal monograde oil would it just mean draining the tank and refilling or would the engine need stripping. I remember my Grandad saying you could not mix the two types of oil.

hes right,
but on a total loss system you might get away with it.

Why not stick to the original oil and drop a bit of castrol R in the rpetrol

I run, will perhaps 'thrash' is the word, my well used 25 Bigport at 9/16 BTDC and use a classic SAE40 oil, with no ill effects. I was always told that even though a total loss system, R can still solidify in oil ways (Big end!) if the bike is not used for many months ? I stick R in the super unleaded, to got our favourite smell. Regards.

Didn't you have that Bantam converted to nuclear energy, Keith ?? I was told that 'it would go like stink', but maybe due to the olive oil UCL !
Olive oil? So that's what was what was meant by 'Something for the week-end, Sir'??
