Frame no. at the end of the tube running under the tank, on the right hand side below the saddle. The engine & gearbox would have had an identical number when the machi9ne left Wolverhampton. M is the year code letter for 1929, the year there were many changes made, some instanly recognised. Rob Harknett. Prewar Officer

Rob,
I found a number 130391 or 1-0391. The number is very difficult to read even with the paint removed. Does that sound like a frame number to you?
Thanking you

130319 Yes it does Bob, BUT not 1929
This number is for a 1930 model 9
refered to as R9 'R' being the code letter for 1930. 500 cc SV machine Bob. Thats not uncommon for a machine to have a few wrong bits of that era, what are the engine and gearbox numbers.? Theres many post war bikes running about miss matched frames/engines, quite often Matchless with AJS frames and vice versa, singles with twin frames & vice versa.

May I add Bob, that suspect second digit may make a big difference, in year & model. So the g/box and engine numbers needed.

Rob,
Thank you for your help. I photographed the number and zoomed it on the computer it is 130391. You are probably right with 1930 as it has a split rear guard and pillion pegs.Would there be any other obvious differences in the frame between the 1929 and 1930 models?
Thanking you
Bob White.

With models ranging from 250 to the v twin, yes Bob. check outsales cat and parts lists pics for the various years here

I noticed I made a typing error on an earlier posting Bob. So I have rechecked that number 130391. BOB I need to make a correction the frame number is most likely 1929 model 9 500 SV not 1930. Seris of number we have are far from correct, when start and end numbers are given, on checking your number is very soon the the 1929 start number , but much earlier that the 1930 start number. You may find parts of the number stamped elsewhere on the frame, also year code letter and model number. Like M or M9 for 1929
