Thanks for that, Cliff. A good read.
25 bhp eh?
In '62 I fitted my Greeves Hawkstone scrambler with a Starmaker 250 two-stroke engine: 25 bhp at 6,200 rpm. I.e. 100 bhp/litre.
(The 500 Manx Norton had the same bhp/litre 10 yrs earlier in '51 but at 7,200 rpm.).
Initially my Greeves had the 9E then the 34A Villiers engine with a Monobloc and for many of us at the start tape the ruddy thing would more often than not start up in four-stroking mode. Novices, (as I then was) had to line up with a dead engine as there had been too much chaos at the starts with marshalls having to drag the melee of riders and bikes off the track after they'd hurtled over-enthusiastically into the first bend. Anyway, the only way to get the four-stroking engine to pick up in two-stroke fashion was to lean the bike over to the left, almost on its side. This was pretty hazardous too as some riders (mostly on four-strokes) preferred to start on the 'inside' even if it meant being behind others at the tape, and whizzing past those unfortunates leaning over, near flat on the ground in front trying to get their two-strokes to rev. No joke for the stationary two-stroke guys to have the handlebar ends of fire-breathing mud-flinging Matchless, BSA or Triumph monsters whipping past your ear.
Ah, happy days.

Well then your knowledge about that can be writen on the back of a postage stamp then

Chris Horsefield won the tv scramblers cup in 64 on one...against riders as the world champion Jeff Smith

And they only made around a hundred

Hi Cliff, thanks for posting these articles up, I found them interesting too. I love two stroke machines and have three at the moment, I would love to add one of these to my fleet. The ideal for me would be a trail version. Just like Roy B has for sale, sadly I have too many bikes tieing up too much cash for the time being, but one day...if there are any left. How many were produced, do you know?
also, have you thought about offering the articles to Jampot magazine? Scanned originals perhaps, to save you the typing?
