It was comboman Rob that told me my 64 CSR wheel was non QD, I brought the bike almost restored and had never had the wheel out until it punctured at 2011 Alternative. I could not get the wheel off the drake drum so took the lot out, It was then Rob informed me about the CSR having a Non QD wheel. He then lent some muscle in getting the tyre off & on for me, Thanks again Rob, A Sussex member also came up with a new tube and long tyre lever, Mr president Roy an electric pump.

It seems quite strange that both QD and non-QD wheels were used. I can't seem to find any references in the parts lists in Christian's archives. Anybody any idea which bikes used which (mine has the full width alloy hub).

1955 onwards all had alloy full width hub, but not all were QD, I have not checked but assume some Comp. bikes were non QD

Ian, in the 1957 parts list you can read that only the road models G3LS and G80S used sprocket/drum 023070 with pin 023072 and [rubber] bush 023073. The C models used sprocket/drum 021634 with bolt 021635 "retaining sprocket to rear hub", so obviously the non-QD type.

It looks as though mine has been fitted with the C model rear wheel which doesn't particularly bother me as the drum / sprocket are in very good condition.

It does seem strange that the comp models would have a non-QD arrangement as they're far more likely to have punctures running at low pressures on rocks etc. I wouldn't fancy taking my back wheel out half way up Grey Mare's Ridge...... According to Don Morley's book, the 1955 C models had a full width QD hub but he doesn't say anything much about later ones.

Again according to the parts list, in 1955 all the spring frame models (touring and competition) had a QD rear wheel. But all rigid frames were non-QD.

And in the 1959 Spares List there are four 'Sprocket and Brake Drum' items as follows:
Part Number 025225 to fit Models G3, G80, G9, G9CSR, G12 and G12CSR
do. do. 025176 to fit Model G3C
do. do. 025245 to fit Models G3CS, G80CS, G9CS and G12CS
do. do. 023070 to fit Models G9 de luxe and G12 de luxe.

My '59 G3 seems to have a QD wheel arrangement, but the rear mudguard is of one-piece construction and this requires the machine to be laid onto its near side in order to remove the wheel (unless in its garage on the hydraulic stand c/w wheel drop). Which reminds me that I have a rear puncture to repair!

Yes, I wondered why they went to one piece mudguard - cost saving I expect although the tooling must have been expensive. I like the detachable rear portion on mine - my last bike was an A10 and it was well near impossible to get the wheel out without as you say lying the bike down. Daft for an all-weather touring machine.

All you really have to do is to carry a kerb stone with you in case you have a puncture, then there is no need to lay the bike over!

You could rather strap a trenching tool to your back and call it a fashion accessory.
