Oh and the battery was wired the wrong way round (-ve earth), so that's all sorted now. I still have what I think is a simple connection problem as sometimes the battery still drains with the lights on - the ammeter needle drops below zero - but sometimes it charges nicely. Still worth checking the alternator coils for earth shorts though I reckon. Fun isn't it!
