Hold on John, there should be a steel kick start shaft bush accessible on the inside of the outer cover. Gently warm the outer case and drive the bush out. Replace the seal and then the bush.

I got the seals and new shaft from Steve at AMC spares so it is all a little confusing. The only unknown is the case and this is coming off `again` just as soon as I have the time.

My experience with Steve is that the guy is a wealth of information - may be worth giving him a quick call to discuss the parts you have.

The `new` bits came from Steve at AMC spares but the only thing which is an unknown at the moment is the case. It all came to me in bits so it could have been got at although it all looks ok. I will have it apart ASAP and let you know

Sorry for the delay on my update, but a holiday got in the way. Ho Hum!. What you need to stop it leaking is an oil seal from a Commando and a mate with a milling machine to take the case out to fit the seal. So far it has only stood over night but it all looks good at the moment , so fingers crossed that it is now sorted. Thanks to every body who showed interest.

There shouldn't be any need for a milling machine as the kickstarter bush on the inside of the outer case is removeable, was on mine anyway. AMC gearbox exploded drawing shows the removeable bush. And if its not too late, worth wrapping some insulating tape round the splined shaft to prevent damaging the new seal when replacing the outer cover.

I did look at doing it that way but my mate was champing at the bit to use his milling machine and it is all good news as I have managed to get in some 80 odd miles this weekend and all is very well in that dept: I think that by doing it from the inside you would still have to do some machining at the old seal has a smaller O.D. than the new one. Anyway it is done now.
I used the feeler gauge method when fitting the case I.E. slid in a 3 thou feeler at the right time and gently move it round. I was shown that method when I started work some 62 years ago and it still works for me.

Advice sought for my M30 with leaking G Box from kick start & gear shift.
I have a 1957 M30. The GBox is stamped M2944 (stamping a bit hard to read so I hope the number is correct).
I want to pursue the option of a repair that Peter120r mentions above i.e., quadratic kickstart and gear spindle seals; as well as the gear change spindle [and it's seal?]. Can someone please point me in the right direction about obtaining a list of part numbers for a complete set and where to go for prices. If I contact AMC spares directly, will Steve know exactly what to quote based on the G Box stamped number I provide?
Alternatively, if I decide to just replace the kick start O ring with the seal that "1608" mentions above, then can someone please advise me of a part number.
