Re: Ignition Timing
The advantage of the thin 'coat hanger' is that it can be positioned vertically in the plug 'ole, whereas I think that with the ones that screw into the plug 'ole one has to make an allowance for the fact that they are always at an angle so the 1/2" reading will be less (more?) than 1/2" of piston movement, especially if the end of the rod is resting on the slope of a domed piston crown.
When you look at the tiny difference between the 7/16" and 1/2" marks on the 'SpridTimer' coat hanger it's easy to see how backlash in the cam and mag chain etc. can affect the end result no matter how carefully one follows the correct procedure.

Re: Ignition Timing
I am currently at the 'setting timing' stage on a project that has been put off for quite some time.
I'm in a tank-off position so find that a knitting needle is working well, since I can get a more direct straight entry down plug hole.

Not sure where this comes from as membership has been steady for the last four years, yes it would be nice to see some from the next generation join us but we will survive .
