022738 - Bolt, chrome, carrier MTG
So I ordered these as I thought it was about time I stopped using the standard bolt while using it to secure a carrier leg (non AMC). The ones being replaced are those that fit into the captive bolt and are 5/16" BSF 26 TPI, 3/4" under the head with a short shoulder of about 1/8". I checked (they're new) with a die.
What arrived was 7/8" under head, fine, but were 3/8"; they won't even go through the hole in the mudguard. I seem to have got something wrong somewhere but sure I took these numbers from the 1956 parts list. Advert to go onto the For Sale section sometime.
Where I definitely went wrong was that I have an additional support (top mounting for towbar) going to these bolts, so really need 1" under the head, 1/4" shoulder plus maybe a small allowance for a washer. Whooops.
Looks like a trip to Hawk Fasteners in Middlesbrough. If it's fine will go on the Matchless.

Johnny, why don’t you make one!

I don't have the skills or equipment to make bolts. Want to be sure I don't stuff up the captive nut.
Wish I did have the equipment and skills or even electricity at my lock up.
It'll all be good.
See you at Rushden.

FWIW, I used 2 rocker box bolts to mount my home made carrier. There is some choice in length among those bolts. These are 22 TPI and as far as I can see I can see I left the original mudguard nuts in place.

Thanks, I've got some spare. I'd need to run the die down but if I'm steadying but so long as I take it steady all would be good.

I buy from a2stainless. When necessary I cut to size, round the head a bit to AMC pattern and perhaps flatten some thread under the head:

They deliver quickly too.

Cheers Ron, that's a good tip for the future but I'll need to get done on Wednesday ready to set off Thursday for Rushden.
Plan to be back in NE Monday night but working at Bishop on Tuesday.
Do you think you'll be going, company on the road would be good.
