Is there a clutch baket thats say 1 3/4" from sprocket to rim as there are 2 part no g 36 3 and g 36 5 and apparently g 36 3 is for the 5 plate clutc

The earlier 350 had a 4 plate clutch G36 5. For '55 both 350 and 500 had the 5 plate clutch g36 3. It's just a case of the parts list illustrations not being updated. It happens a lot!
You don't say what clutch plates you're using. Are they new Sureflex type? In which case you probabely won't get all 5 in. I'd try it with 4 and see how it goes. Worth fitting new springs as well. Have you got the correct rollers? These are not 1/4x1/4, but are a few thou shorter or they will end load.

thanks for that dave bike is registered sept 55 but 54 on engine

trouble is dave I haven't done a matchless before so I don't know whats right or wrong with the parts ive got have you any idea which clutch rod is best the smaller diameter was with the bike but the bigger one will fit in as I bought one

The thin one is for an AMC clutch. The Burman is 5/16" dia by about 10 1/8" long for the 500.
