front forks

Tell me, although there are differences to the externals of the fork sliders are the internal dimensions the same i.e. across the years/models and within / across the two stanchion sizes. I'm wondering about interchangeability.

In the parts book, it is inferred that they are not interchangeable. Having said that I recently tried a pair of sliders from 1-1/8" stanchions on 1-1/4" stanchions and they slid on, however I did not fit the top bush and oil seal. Alas, I no longer have them so I cannot experiment further.
