new member and first question

Post by volker_15 »

Hi everybody!

Finally it happenend. I´m a proud Matchless owner club member :D In May 2020 I bought a Matchless G3L 1941-WD, a more or less basket case, which I´m rebuilding.

My first question: Does anybody know the thread type and thread size of the release valve body STD-836. The threads in the crank case are messed up and before I buy a spare crank case, I give it a try and recut it or maybe insert a Heli Coil. I used the search option in this forum, but couldn't find an answer to this question.

Thanks and greetings from Vienna

Volker

Welcome to the club.
The parts list does not give the thread size, someone will know and tell you. If you need a new release valve body STD 836. You will need to use the new part number to find it. Which is 000836.
If you also need a new diaphragm for the body STD 835 the new part number is 000835. Both parts are available from Russells, http://russellmotors.co.uk/Classic%20bi ... CHLESS.pdf
To covert your WD bikes old part numbers to new, use this list. If there is no new part number given, that means the part was not continued in use for postwar years.

Welcome, Volker.
There is an original illustrated WD Spares List here:

http://archives.jampot.dk/book/Spares_l ... 632-33.pdf

and a Workshop Specification manual. It is dated 1953 but will apply to your 1941 bike:

The 53 book is tolerances etc. only. Here's the workshop manual. http://archives.jampot.dk/book/Owners_m ... Manual.pdf
Note the spares list link above is for WD contracts 12632 & 12633. So will only act as a quide not 100% correct for every WD bike. It would depend where the bike would be used. Desert up to the far north. At least the camouflage colour would differ.
To discover the correct parts list for your bike, I would need to know the frame and engine numbers.
However, the bike may not have survived intact, So the engine number may not be from the same contract as the frame.
There would also be an Instruction manual for each contract. For example. http://archives.jampot.dk/book/Owners_m ... n_Book.pdf

I've measured the release valve and it looks like 3/4" diameter and 20TPI thread. That would be 3/4" BSCY cycle thread. Tracy tools would supply this size.

Thank you Rob and Spriddler for your advices. Since May I have read a lot about Matchless. Some things are still confusing. Also, my Matchless is a conglomerate from different years (later fork, frame is also not original 1941 WD). That keeps the things interesting. My intention is to rebuild it as a "civilian machine".
I already was able to identify the correct service manuals and spare parts lists. But thank you for the links. I'm glad about any advice.

Dave, thank you for the measurement. I have restored and rebuilt a Royal Enfield Bullet 350 von 1958 but imperial thread types and sizes are still a mystery for me. I will order a tap and try to re-threading it. Hope it will work.
