Post by TMB44 »

I have recently had my machine dated as a 1966 model 14 csr and was wondering if anyone had any photos of what it should look like. My machine is still pretty much a basket case and there are a number of items missing ie clocks, front mudguard etc. Could anyone help with any photos? Especially detailed ones of different views. Thank you.

BTW TMB44 I would also advise you to join the club, you'll be needing many spare parts and the parts scheme is well worth using...

Also you'll probably get more goodwill from people that are members in terms of advice and other help.

Take a look at the images in the photos section of this website and do a search on google.

Cheers

Hi , Look in the Brooklands Books, "AJS and Matchless Gold Portfolio 1945- 1966. Page 144 , your model 1966 Super Sapphire. Road Test, plus pictures. Good detail on light alloy mudguards which were new for 1966. For detail engine changes etc the Bacon book will provide you with that. Chris.

HI again, Just noticed really good picture of your bike in Matchless form ( 1966 Monitor Ninety G2CSR) Book, AJS and Matchless Buyers Guide by Martin Redman. Its the mudguards which are noticeable different. Author provides history of changes for Model 14 CSR and G2CSR from their introduction in 1962. He reckons they were good for 85 MPH. Fastest I went on mine was about 60.. but I know it would have gone higher. Chris.

85mph!! My 650 twin feels as if it is about to blow up at 85. Actually, come to think of it, it did

Hi, Thing is the later CSR models were claimed by AMC to reach these higher speeds..higher than some of the 350"s for example and Peter Williams and Tony Woods won the 1964 Thruxton 500 Miles race with this model. From 1964 the compression ratio was increased to 9. 5 : 1, larger inlet valve, an improved crank pin, stiffened crank pin, improved con rod , steel flywheel, larger carburettor etc. Nice little bike, sought after in Sweden..well ,judging by the amount of enquiries I had.. and the chap who bought it said he would have it..had not seen it... and made a nine hour return journey for it. Chris.
