AJS Blue

Post by John T »

I believe I have found an off the shelf paint match for the AJS blue. Looked through the Halfords range and decided that the Rover Electric Blue was a very good match to the previous paint colour.
Sprayed with white primer and then a few coats of the Rover Blue.
Anyone else tried this paint for a colour match ?

John, pleased you found a good colour match but beware!
Ive read elsewhere on this forum that Halfords paint is not compatible with petrol.Something to do with it being acrylic or something.
Do a search to find out more.
Speaking as someone who has painted a bike by aerosol can I woudnt say it cant be done but Iwould recomend using the paint code from Halfords then getting your local paint specialist to mix some up then buy/borrow/hire a spray gun.
Of course if money no object you can allways pay a pro to do it in two pac but wheres the fun in that?

I also bought from Halfords today some Petrol Resistant Clear Lacquer, which states on the can Ideal for Motorcycle petrol tanks.

I can confirm from experience that the normal Halfords paint is not petrol resistant. I filled the shiny tank on a sunny day and as the fuel expanded and came out of the cap, it streaked down the RHS. When I went to put the tank bag on, it slid off taking all the paint and primer with it.

I also had a tank professionally done with two pack lacquer. Then when I placed it down on foam during an engine rebuild, a tiny petrol leak weeped into the foam which spread it around the bottom of the tank. Over the two months it was there, that also stripped the two pack, colour coat and primer off as well. Anyone wishing to see this can inspect it at the Jampot Rally which I head off to this afternoon.

Regards
Charles
