Didn't realise you did not have the engine running,
think once you have it running the problem will go away.

No, so far the engine hasent run...
Just pushing the bike along the garage floor generates the crunchy noises.. as detailed in my notes above.

Cheeky bugger.. very self sufficient down here... and can have parts arrive from Steve Surbey in 7 to 10 days, no worries.
Shaft end float has been checked, and ok.. still have the original gasket on so good there..

Apologies, but one reads posts from those in the colonies ( ;) ) about the difficulty and cost of getting AMC specific parts. My daughter in law comes from Busselton in WA and her father has often commented on the hassle to get parts for his classic British car.
I do admire your patience in not yet having started up the engine!

She runs again...
My CP gearbox issues are solved, I finished up replacing the Main Shaft with an old spare one...the only CP part I had to change... worked a treat.

The only difference in the two shafts, is the slightly longer shoulder on the upper one, this is the one I have now fitted...I think it held that cog (3rd gear ?) away from the sliding dog clutch... so all good.
I have done 80 miles this week on short runs, has a monobloc on and a bit fluffy low down, but great cruising at 50 mph... will fiddle until I get it ok.

Huge thanks for all the ideas and input, end result is a runner.

Gary, Before you blame the Gearbox - can you start the bike up with the outer PCC off? If so I would start the bike up and in neutral pull the clutch lever in and watch the clutch end plate if it 'wobbles', you have your answer. Not all clutch springs are the same and you may have to adjust them separately to get a paraallel clutch plate withdrawl at idle.
