1954 AJS 16 MS carb issue

Post by Paulie B »

Hello everyone.
My 16 MS will only run with the choke on about a third. It’s starts first kick with no choke, absolutely fine and idles nicely but will not go down the road until I add choke. It is running out of puff early too and will not rev at all. I can just about get her up to 50mph but it’s an effort. Any ideas? Thanks. Paul..

If it isn't blocked jets all of those symptoms are absolutely typical of not advancing the ignition after starting - i.e starts fine, idles well but won't rev etc.
You don't say if it's a new to you bike so pardon me for suggesting such a thing but are you sure you aren't muddling the operation of the choke control with that of the A/R control?
If you don't have it you can find the Owners Manual with instructions for your bike here:

I t sounds to me that you are not using the choke correctly. Pull the lever toward youto take choke off
Push away from you to apply choke.

Thanks guys. I was so used to pulling a lever for the choke, that I assumed that no choke was in the slack position. Feel a bit daft.
