Why are there two different radial widths of the piston rings

Re: G80/18 Piston Rings Radial Width
I wonder if its the depth of the ring to help compensate for liner wear on a used engine . Im guessing the width is the same between both ring sets as wear on the groove under normal circumstances is minimal
Maybe the replacement set gets TAN load back to standard on a used bore (force required to close the ring to nominal gap) , helps control wear and oil consumption
is it possible to get a copy of the matchless / Ajs section of the second book . is it available online to download ? its not in the Helpote book i have !

Re: G80/18 Piston Rings Radial Width
I am working on a G80 engine, it came with a piston but no rings.
I bought a set of Wellworthy rings 0.116 radial width.
Talking to Steve at AMC he said to make sure I had the right rings as they came in two radial widths and fitting the wrong ones could damage the bore.
That's what set me off looking for information.
The first catalogue, which is from Christian's Archive, lists two different ring sets but not different individual rings.
The second catalogue extract was attached to a set of 0.116 rings on ebay. The vendor said they were the 'earlier' ones 'later ones being wider'.
All a bit puzzling to me.

Good suggestion...
I'll wait a while first and see if anyone else here has any information.
