AJS SB6 1931 - gear gate question

Can anyone tell me if the AHS SB6 Bigport from 1931 (Saddletank) has a different change pattern for gears - is it first gear down and top gear up - basically the reverse of other similar bikes?

My mate has one and it seems to be the case or sonethibg is amiss.
